Maravan, 33, a Tamil asylum seeker, is working as a kitchen hand in a top hotel in Zurich, at a level far below his abilities. For Maravan is a gifted and passionate cook. In Sri Lanka his great aunt had introduced him to the art of cooking, and not least into the secrets of aphrodisiac cuisine. When he is fired, his colleague Andrea encourages him into a deal of a very special kind: joint catering for love menus. At first they cook for couples with whom they are put in touch by a sex therapist. But word gets around about the success of Love Food, and a much wealthier clientele starts showing an interest: men from the world of politics and business – and from the grey zones on their margins. Maravan is worried that the business could become ›unsavoury‹ – and indeed it does. But he is in urgent need of the money in order to enable his family back in Sri Lanka to survive. ›The Cook‹ has been sold to: Christian Bourgois (France) Atloantic Books (UK) Kachi (Korea) Audioteket (Denmark) Signature (Netherlands) Lumen (Spain) Uniscorp (Bulgaria) Trivium (Hungary) Mono i Manjana (Serbia) Sellerio (Italy) Kastaniotis (Greece) Eksmo (Russia) Swiat Ksiazki (Poland) Jota (Czech Republic) Shanghai Translation (China)
»An oeuvre, which is remarkable documented, with a rhythm as captivating as appetising.«Le Monde
»›The Cook‹ starts out as a waspish, deliciously cool society novel perfumed with exotic scents. All the while the masked moralist lays his narrative strands with such casual elegance that in a twist, as surprising as it is brilliant, the noose seems to tighten of its own accord.«Süddeutsche Zeitung
»It’s a crying shame we cannot eat books. Martin Suter’s new novel, ›The Cook‹ would be one of the first to melt on the tongue. Suter skilfully blends the financial crisis, civil war and art of cookery into a gripping novel. With a powerful after-taste: and the recipes are included!«Brigitte
»His literary take on the culinary is as full of mystery as his crime stories, only more exotic, and more erotic.«Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung
»Martin Suter is a virtuoso in the refined drawing together of strands of plot.«Tages Anzeiger
»Simply fantastic!«Neon
»Suter’s success is phenomenal.«NZZ am Sonntag
»Martin Suter is an elegant novelist. His latest novel is a story about society as well as globalisation - critical and political the same time.«Die Zeit
»Suter is smart - and a gifted author.«Frankfurter Rundschau
»A smooth design-bestseller«Der Spiegel
